FRISCO – Sam Houston State catcher Robie Rojas has been tough to slow down in Southland Conference play. That was reflected again this weekend and on Monday, the backstop received his due.
Rojas was named Southland Conference Hitter of the Week after helping Sam Houston to a three-game sweep against Nicholls last weekend. The Jersey Village product totaled nine hits on the weekend as the Bearkats continued the best league start in program history at 12-0.
The senior finished a triple shy of the cycle Sunday while belting his second homer of the season. Rojas' long ball was one of five on the day for Sam Houston, who matched a program record and set a new team best against a Southland opponent.
He tallied three RBIs in the series opener and added a pair of doubles in the middle game while also picking a Nicholls runner off first base in the ninth inning to help preserve a 6-5 win.
For the week, Rojas went 9-for-16 (.563) with four RBIs, three doubles and a homer while slugging .938 and reaching base more than half the time (.563).
Sam Houston returns to action on Tuesday, visiting Baylor at 6:35 p.m. The game begins a season-long nine game road trip for the Bearkats, who have spent 26 of their first 32 games at home. Rojas posted two RBIs in the first meeting against the Bears, on March 7 in Huntsville.
