2017 Schedule
HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State soccer will play 18 matches including nine at home during the 2017 season, the program announced on Tuesday.
The Bearkats begin action with a neutral-site matchup against Cal State-Bakersfield on August 18 from Edinburg. The team starts a stretch of six home matches in eight outings with the home opener on August 25 when the Kats face off against Jackson State at 6:30 p.m.
Sam Houston will play two additional non-conference home games including Oral Roberts on August 27 at 10 a.m. and Louisiana on September 8 at 6:30 p.m. The Kats open Southland Conference play with three-consecutive home games beginning with Central Arkansas on September 15 at 6:30 p.m.
Other home conference matches include A&M-Corpus Christi, Houston Baptist, Nicholls, Southeastern Louisiana and the regular-season finale against Stephen F. Austin on October 27.
After missing out a season ago, the Kats will seek a return to the Southland Conference Tournament, November 1-5 in Corpus Christi. An appearance in the league event would be the eighth in nine years under head coach Tom Brown, who enters his 10th season at the helm.
QUOTEABLES:
Head coach Tom Brown on the 2017 schedule…
“I think with our non-conference schedule we wanted a mix of teams to play against that will help prepare us for conference. I think that those teams definitely give us a challenge because we will be a very young team this upcoming year.”
Head coach Tom Brown on what stands out about the schedule…
“With the non-conference season we were able to balance it a little better this year with teams who offered return games. We will start off on the road. A good part of that is being able to get away after preseason and be isolated for two games. I think that will help as we continue to build the chemistry without missing any class with travel.”
Head coach Tom Brown on the team and expectations for the season…
“With having several transfers and quite a few freshmen, there is a lot of unknowns but we were glad they were able to get in where we can get an idea about them and they could get to know our style of play. We definitely believe in this recruiting class and know they can be an impact class. With all of them committing to be here Summer 2, I will be able to step in on our first day and know we will be on a higher level. It says a lot about their commitment.”
