HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State welcomes Cory Herchenroeder, who has served as an assistant coach with Missouri State since 2015, to the Bearkat soccer program to serve in the same capacity, head coach Tom Brown announced Tuesday.
Herchenroeder, who served as head goalkeeper coach with the Bears, joins Sam Houston for the upcoming season as the Bearkats search for their eighth Southland Conference Tournament appearance in nine seasons and first ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
“I think Cory's had some good experience both on the field with the work he has done with goalkeepers and in the office as far as helping to make sure the recruiting all of our off-the-field activities are prepared each day,” Brown said. “He got in here late in the spring and did a great job of being able to step right in and work with the players. He did a lot of individual training and the players have enjoyed that opportunity.”
At Missouri State, he organized the teams' defensive shape, tactics and in game strategy as well as was responsible for developing and implementing training techniques for practices. His techniques helped the Bears log 10 shutouts alongside a 14-15-5 overall record.
“I am excited to be a part of the program, Herchenroeder said. “I think a lot of why I decided to come down here was working with Coach Brown. Obviously, he has a good resume and I could tell I could learn quite a bit from him. That opportunity seemed like it fit was I was looking for. Seeing how driven the girls are willing to put in the work … they want to win. I'd like to think I can help them develop this spring and going into the fall.”
He joined the Missouri State men's and women's soccer staffs in the spring of 2015 after serving as the head goalkeeper coach and assistant varsity coach for both the boys and girls teams at Jefferson City High (Mo.) School. Herchenroeder coached the Jays and Lady Jays for three seasons. His teams combined for 42 shutouts in three seasons with him in charge of the goalkeepers.
In addition to working at Jefferson City High, Herchenroeder has been leading the U10 Girls of the Capitals Soccer Club for three seasons, serving as the team's head coach.
Prior to his stint in Jefferson City, Herchenroeder spent two seasons coaching at his alma mater, William Woods University. While earning his Master's Degree in Athletic/Activities Administration, Herchenroeder worked as Owl's head goalkeeper's coach. He compiled a 20-16-2 record as an assistant coach for two years at William Woods University, including nine shutouts.
Herchenroeder earned his Bachelor's Degree in Sports Management from William Woods in May of 2011, before continuing on and earning his Master's Degree in May of 2014.
