HUNTSVILLE – After a tough start on opening weekend in College Station, the Sam Houston State Bearkat volleyball team will look to crack the win column with three matches this weekend when they take part in the Chattanooga Classic.
The Kats will kick off the weekend against the host Mocs on Friday night before battling both Murray State and former Southland Conference rival ULM on Saturday. All matches can be followed via Live Stats or with updates by following @BearkatsVB on Twitter. Fans will also be able to watch SHSU in its Friday night tilt against Chattanooga, courtesy of the SOCON Digital Network.
INSIDE THE SERIES
vs Chattanooga
This will be just the second time Sam Houston State has battled Chattanooga on the volleyball court. The Kats won the first meeting, sweeping the Mocs in New Orleans in 1992.
vs Murray State
Sam Houston has twice battled the Racers and Saturday's match will be the third time that the teams have met on a neutral court. They have not faced off since 1992, with the Bearkats having swept each of the first two meetings.
vs ULM
Former rivals in the Southland Conference, the Kats own a 16-0 all-time record against ULM; however, only one of those victories has come since 2005.
BEARKAT BYTES
- Coming into the 2017 season, Bearkats are returning four starters and eight total letter winners after a run to the finals at the Southland Conference Tournament.
- Sam Houston State has been picked to finish third in the Southland Conference race as league officials unveiled with 3 players selected to the preseaon all-SLC first team.
- During Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum renovations last year, Bearkats moved to the Recreational Sports Center courts for home matches. After dropping its first match vs Texas A&M-Corpus Christi the Kats went on and won the rest of their home matches, went on to win their next six home matches before moving back into Johnson Coliseum for the season finale where they knocked off New Orleans.
- Brooke White and Jordyn Vaughn return to 2017 Bearkat squad after leading the team in kills with both over 400, ranking fifth and sixth respectively in the Southland last year. They picked right back up where they left off at the Texas A&M Invitational in leading the Kats in kills over the weekend. They are each less than 100 kills away from reaching 1,000 for their careers.
- Head coach Brenda Gray ranks 13th among all NCAA Division I active coaches with a total 663 wins in her 33 years at Sam Houston.
- The Kats, along with defending league champion A&M-Corpus Christi, were the only two schools to place three players on the 12-member preseason Southland Conference first team.
