More than just a game, SHSU football returns

HUNTSVILLE – The past week has been trying for all of us as Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc on the Gulf Coast. Lives were lost. Homes and businesses were destroyed. In one way or another, we were all affected.
Through the devastation, however, Texans showed the nation the true qualities of the American spirit. At Sam Houston State, that trait is at the forefront of what we stand for. The university motto, “The Measure of a Life is its Service,” has echoed across our ravaged region.
While our state experienced historic flooding and damage, that of which will take time to comprehend its magnitude, college football quietly began its season. The pomp and circumstance seemed to have little place at the table with more important matters at hand.
At the same time, maybe now more than ever, we need it. Bearkat fans and football fans in this state deserved this game in Texas. If nothing else, Friday night, when No. 3 Sam Houston faces No. 7 Richmond, we have something to cheer for. A temporary distraction or return to normalcy.
Thanks to the generosity of Baylor University, who opens its season one night later in McLane Stadium, we've got our game in our great state. If you attend, we encourage you to thank all of its institution's individuals for the selflessness and friendship.
If you are able to safely attend, we would love to have you in Waco. For one night, let's turn Waco orange. With the eyes of the FCS on the division's premier opening weekend matchup, let's remind them what Bearkat Nation is all about. Football is just a game but on Friday, we hope it can be something more.
Sincerely,
Sam Houston State University Athletics
