Throughout the season, Sam Houston freshman defender Ellie Chapple will provide a players' perspective of the Bearkat soccer campaign. The squad enters its second weekend of Southland Conference action. The squad hosts A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday and Houston Baptist on Sunday.
Chatting With Chappy -- 20 September 2017
Our first conference game was rough. It was hard losing that first game (plus losing at home). The first half was extremely rough (especially since we gave up 2 quick goals). The second half was much better. The hard work of Lindsey Bienski really lifted the spirits of the team; her hard work even paid off with a goal!! We started to get more chances going forward and appeared more dominant.
Moving forward, we are more determined to come back from our loss and make sure this season is a good one. In addition to a good week of training, we have also been putting in work off the field. We have watched film, discussed the good/bad, and set a game plan for this upcoming weekend as we take on Texas A&M – Corpus Christi (Friday) and Houston Baptist (Sunday). We have also made sure to take care of any bumps/bruises by seeing our awesome athletic trainer (Sandy!!).
As for school, I had 3 quizzes, 2 exams, and an essay this week. The other freshmen have also been busy with quizzes, tests, and papers galore. We are beginning to really dive into all of our classes. When we aren't on the soccer field or in the class room, we are probably eating, napping, studying, or doing homework. (Being a student-athlete is tough work.) We are fairly busy with practice, weights, class, meetings, treatment, and eating/napping at some point in there. One good thing about living with the other freshmen is that we all do homework/study together. Some of us have the same classes, so we hold each other accountable.
This weekend is a very special one because we have the 2018 soccer commits coming on their official visit. The girls will get to see our Friday and Sunday games, along with staying in the dorms/apartments with some of the girls. They get to experience a small piece of what being a student-athlete at Sam Houston looks like. I am especially excited to go to the football game this Saturday with all the girls. (My roomie, Baylee Ford, and I have been talking about dressing cute and tailgating all week!! We are super excited to say the least.)
