FRISCO – Quarterback Ty Brock has been named the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week, according to a release from league officials Monday morning.
In addition to earning the weekly honor from the Southland, he was also named the STATS FCS National Freshman of the Week in a release put out later in the day.
Brock made an immediate impact on the Sam Houston offense on Saturday, helping the Bearkats to a 34-31 overtime win over No. 13 Central Arkansas. It was his first start as a Bearkat and the first time he played a full four-quarter game of football since his sophomore year of high school.
The 6-4 redshirt freshman completed 27 of his 43 passes to seven different receivers, finishing with 305 yards passing and a touchdown. Additionally, he made things happen with his legs, picking up another 73 yards on the ground with a pair of scores.
The win evened the Bearkats' overall mark at 2-2 on the year and made them 1-1 in league play this season. Brock and the Bearkats will look to make it two wins in a row on Saturday when they travel to NRG Stadium in Houston for the 93rd edition of the Battle of the Piney Woods against Stephen F. Austin.
Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. from the home of the Houston Texans and will be aired on ESPN3.
