THIBODAUX, La. – After Nicholls came back to tie the match, junior Katy Johnson scored the golden goal in the 93rd minute to give the Sam Houston State soccer team (3-8-3, 2-3-2 SLC) a 2-1, overtime victory over Nicholls, Friday evening.
After goalkeeper Christina Hendershot started the match with a save, Johnson and Meredith Carlson registered consecutive shots to open up the Bearkats' offensive efforts. Micaela Birt, Whitney Woodward and Courtney Pawlik all registered shots before junior Lexi Bullard put the Kats up on the board.
Notching the second goal of her career, Bullard sunk the opening goal in the 41st minute after receiving a cross from Lexi Fowler into the box. She immediately headed the ball past Nicholls' starting goalkeeper Roosa Hurmerinta to give the Kats an early 1-0 lead.
Both teams were silent after halftime but, with 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Sam Houston committed a foul in the 18-yard box to prompt a penalty kick for the Colonels. Nicholls' Celine Schot stepped up to face Hendershot and sunk the equalizer to tie things up at one goal apiece. Neither team was able to break the tie in the remaining minutes, resulting in the Kats' sixth overtime contest of the season.
Giving the Kats their first overtime win of the season, Carlson fed Johnson on the left side of the box in the 93rd minute and she netted the ball over the head of Hurmerinta to clinch the 2-1 victory. Bullard and Johnson led the Kats with one goal apiece and Hendershot finished the match with three saves. With the win, the Kats improve to 3-8-3 on the season and 2-3-2 in the Southland Conference.
