FRISCO – After pulling off a feat not done in the Southland Conference since 2009, Sam Houston State running back Kyran Jackson has been named the SLC Offensive Player of the Week, according to a release by league officials on Monday morning.
The honor is the first such honor for Jackson and the second time this season a Bearkat has claimed a weekly honor from the league.
Jackson rushed 23 times for 152 yards and a score, while also hauling in four passes for 116 yards for 268 all-purpose yards in Saturday's 42-28 win over Northwestern State. He is the first Bearkat in history to have both 100 yards rushing and 100 yards receiving in a single game and is the first SLC player to do so since McNeese's Toddrick Pendland pulled off the feat in the Cowboys' road upset of Appalachian State in 2009.
He is one of just two players in the FCS to achieve the 100/100 feat this season, joined by Terrence Stephens Jr. of Robert Morris who also did so on Saturday vs Duquesne. For Jackson, who has started the last three games for the Kats in the backfield, it was the first 100-yard game of either sort in his career. His 28-yard touchdown run in the third quarter gave the Bearkats the lead for good. He also had a 56-yard catch in the fourth quarter which is the longest play from scrimmage for the Kats this year.
Jackson currently ranks seventh in the SLC with 63.4 yards per game on the ground, but is averaging 102 yards per game rushing in his three starts.
The Bearkats will go after their fourth win in a row on Saturday when they head to Beaumont for a 3 p.m. meeting with Lamar. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. from Provost-Umphrey Stadium.
