FRISCO – For the fourth time this season senior Taylor Cunningham has been named the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week, according to a release from league officials on Monday afternoon.
Cunningham helped the Bearkats finish out a tough stretch of six matches in 12 days with three victories on the week, running Sam Houston's record to 17-5 overall and to 9-1 in Southland play, just one match out of first place with six matches to go.
The league leader in kills added 43 more to her total for the year, averaging 3.91 for the week and 4.75 in her final two matches. She had just five kills, but added 12 digs and three blocks in a sweep of HBU to open the week. Two days later she delivered a match-high 17 kills and five blocks in a win over Southeastern Louisiana, hitting .395 in the match on 38 swings.
Cunningham then closed out the week with a 21-kill, 22-dig performance in a hard-fought win over Northwestern State, adding five blocks along the way. It was a career-high in digs for the senior and just the third 20/20 double-double by a Southland player this year.
She currently ranks in the league's top 10 in kills per set, digs per set, blocks per set and attack percentage.
Cunningham and the Bearkats will hit the road this week to take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Houston Baptist, beginning Thursday at Corpus Christi.
