Cunningham claims fifth SLC honor

FRISCO – For the fifth week this season Sam Houston State senior Taylor Cunningham has claimed a weekly honor from the Southland Conference as the league named her the defensive player of the week on Monday, per a release from league officials.
Cunningham delivered another big match against ACU in the Bearkats' season finale, helping Sam Houston secure the No. 3 seed in this week's SLC Tournament. The league's leader in kills per set slammed home 19 scores on 44 swings with just three misfires, hitting .318 for in SHSU's lone match of the week. The six-rotation middle blocker added another 21 digs and three more blocks to her total as well, giving her the 15th double-double of her senior season.
She and the rest of the Bearkats finished off the regular season with 21 victories, tied for the most by the team since the 1996 season and secured the No. 3 seed in this week's Southland Conference Tournament in Natchitoches, La.
The Kats will kick off the tournament on Friday at 4 p.m. against No. 6 McNeese and with a victory would move into the tournament semifinals against the winner of No. 2 Central Arkansas and No. 7 Northwestern State.
