HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State senior safety Adrian Contreras has been named to the Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-District first team, according to a release from CoSIDA Thursday afternoon.
The honor comes as little surprise for Contreras, who already has already completed his undergraduate degree in accounting and is currently pursuing a graduate degree at SHSU.
The Georgetown, Texas, native was named to the SLC all-academic team last season and will now be an automatic selection onto the same team this year due to his selection to the CoSIDA all-district team.
Contreras earned an honorable mention all-SLC nod in 2017 after totaling 93 tackles to go with a pair of interceptions, leading the Kats back to the FCS semifinals for the second time in his career.
This year he is is once again a team captain for the Bearkats and has started each of the last 40 games at safety for Sam Houston entering Saturday's season finale at Houston Baptist. He turned in a career-high 14 tackles and had an interception on Saturday against Abilene Christian
Contreras currently ranks 10th in the Southland Conference with 75 tackles for the year, and is eighth all-time in tackles at SHSU with 296.
The Google Cloud Academic All-America Football team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom, doing so separately in four divisions – NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
Contreras, along with all other first team selections, will now advance onto the Google Cloud Academic All-America ballot. First and second (if applicable) Academic All-America honorees will be announced in early December.
He is the sixth-ever Bearkat football player to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District honors and the first since P.J. Giddens in 2016.
