Kats Roll Tigers in Season Opener

HUNTSVILLE – Senior Cameron Delaney knocked down a career-high 21 points as the Sam Houston State men's basketball team opened the 2018-19 season with an 85-64 win over East Texas Baptist, Tuesday night at Johnson Coliseum.
Joining him in double-digits was Southland Preseason All-Conference selection Marcus Harris (17) and newcomer Kai Mitchell, who raked in 14 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. The Bearkat bench combined for 26 points and Sam Houston finished the game shooting 47.9% from the field.
After a slow start, Harris got the Bearkats rolling three minutes into the game with a quick four points in the paint. The Kats struggled to stop the Tigers' three-point game and found themselves down 23-18 before turning on the gas halfway through the first half.
Thanks to a solid defensive stop on the opposing end, the Bearkats swung the momentum and took over for the remainder of the half. Cameron Delaney went off for nine points in just under five minutes and used a mid-range jumper at the 8:30 mark to give the Bearkats their first lead of the game at 24-23.
Reaching 31 points, the Sam Houston defense held ETBU scoreless for eight minutes before the Tigers knocked down a pair of three-pointers to cut the Bearkats' lead down to just two. Mitchell and fellow junior Chad Bowie both recorded buckets to guide Sam Houston to a narrow 36-32 lead going into halftime.
