STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Sam Houston State Bearkats could not find any traction only picking up two hits on the day as No. 25 Mississippi State cruised to win 5-0 in the closer of the Bulldog Slamboree on Sunday at Nusz Park.
Lindsey McLeod struck out two and walked two, but Mississippi State (16-3) was able to score a trio of runs on three hits from Emily Heimberger on three at bats and that margin proved to be a hole too deep for Sam Houston (6-12) to climb out of.
Mississippi State's Holly Ward was nearly untouchable for the Bulldogs, going the distance and allowing just two hits and walking none with 10 punchouts for the complete-game win. Bailey White and Katie Andrie picked up the only hits of the day for the Bearkats.
Calyn Adams gave the Bulldogs an early lead with a 2-run sacrifice fly, scoring one on a fielding error by the Bearkats in the second. Two innings later the Bulldogs tacked on two more to take a 4-0 advantage.
They added another in the sixth, using a Bearkat error and stolen base making the score 5-0.
Sam Houston will return home to Bearkat Softball Complex to start Southland Conference play against Incarnate Word for a doubleheader on Friday, first pitch at 3pm.
