FRISCO - Sam Houston State junior Andrew Fregia has been named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week in an announcement from league officials on Sunday afternoon.
The native of Liberty, Texas, turned in a monster week to lead the Bearkats to a 3-1 mark, helping them clinch the outright Southland regular season title with a sweep at UIW. The junior reached safely in 12 of 20 plate appearances and at one point reached base in a string of eight consecutive times to the plate.
Fregia had a double and scored a run in a loss at Texas A&M on Tuesday, then had a hit in Thursday's opener, flying out to the warning track twice. Fregia then erupted for a 5-for-5 day that included a pair of two-run homers in Friday's win, scoring six times and tying the single-game program record for runs scored that has stood since 1986. He homered in his first at-bat in Saturday's win, finishing just a triple shy of the cycle.
This season Fregia has already set a new SHSU and Southland Conference career record with 19 triples in his three years as a Bearkat. He ranks in the top five in the league in slugging percentage (.600), runs (52), RBI (49) and is tied for the SLC lead with 11 home runs.
Fregia and the Bearkats will kick off the Southland Conference Tournament on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. as the No. 1 overall seed against No. 8 New Orleans.
