Wallace claims SLC Player of the Week

FRISCO – Senior Madison Wallace has been named the Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week according to a release from league officials on Monday following a weekend where she helped lead Sam Houston State to a trio of wins.
The Bearkats have been red hot since shifting Wallace to libero, and it showed this weekend in Arlington. The senior was named the MVP of the Maverick Invitational after averaging 6.22 digs per set in three Bearkat sweeps, running the Sam Houston win streak to four in a row to close out non-conference play.
After closing out the previous week with 20 digs in four sets in a win over Chicago State, she kicked off her weekend in Arlington with 20 digs in a three-set win over Belmont. One day later she added another 20 digs in a sweep of Grand Canyon and then kept alive another 16 with a career-best six service aces in a victory over UT Arlington.
It is the first league honor she has earned in her career, and the second time a Bearkat has claimed the award this season. Wallace currently ranks fourth in the league with an average of 4.24 digs per set for the year. Those efforts have helped vault the Kats to the top spot in the Southland Conference in both team digs (17.90 dps) and opponent's hitting percentage (.141).
Wallace and the rest of the Bearkats will open up Southland Conference play this week with a pair of matches at home, starting Thursday evening against McNeese. They will then host Lamar at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
