Bowlers take third in Dallas

DALLAS -- There aren't many times during any collegiate season that a team will face the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 ranked teams in the country in a single year. The Sam Houston State bowlers did just that on Sunday alone.
Facing the top three teams in the country at the Stormin Ladyjack Classic at USA Bowl in Dallas, the Kats posted a 1-2 record and finished third in the event. They were 9-4 overall in the tournament, with six of those wins coming against top-10 competition. The nine wins was tied for most in the tournament with Vanderbilt who won the event.
“This was a huge weekend for us,” said head coach. “We really needed to come out and post some big wins against the top teams in the country and we were able to do that.”
The Kats opened up the morning taking on No. 1 ranked McKendree in the final traditional match. Despite a loss, the Kats moved up a spot in the standings and entered bracket play as the No. 2 seed. Facing Vandy, the Kats took a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven match play before dropping games four and five. Facing elimination, the Kats took the sixth game forcing a seventh where they fell.
In the third-place match against No. 3 ranked Nebraska, the Kats closed strong winning the final three games to take the match.
“After a tough loss to Vandy, I thought it showed a lot about our team to bounce back and best Nebraska,” Hagen said. “They narrowly beat us on Friday, so it was good to come back and get a win and bring home some hardware.”
Katelyn Dickerson registered a top 10 finish for the Kats, averaging a 203 over six games, including a high game of 246. Bea Hernandez was 20thoverall with a 192 average.
