BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Indoor Track and Field season is set to wrap up with two more competitions remaining, the biggest for the Bearkats beginning this weekend when they travel to Birmingham Alabama for the Southland Indoor Championships.
The competition will start on Sunday and run through Monday.
Live results from the meet will be available throughout the two-day event, while a live stream will also be available on the Southland Digital Network. Fans are encouraged to also follow @BearkatsTFXC and @SouthlandSports on Twitter for updates from the meet.
The Sam Houston State Bearkats men's and women's team are seeking their fourth straight championship win. It's been a run of dominance within the conference dating back to 2016.
SHSU has enjoyed a successful season so far with the men's team has set new standards for the program ranking as high as 17th in the 2019 NCAA D-1 Men's Indoor Track & Field Rating Index. The ranking came in the fourth week of the season and it stands as the highest the Bearkats have ever been ranked on a national level.
Going into the Southland Championships the men's team is ranked first in the conference, seventh in the region and 21st in the nation.
The women head into the competition second in the conference, 16th in the region and 113th in the nation.
Some of the notable athletes to keep an eye on heading into the competition are Chris Jefferson and Jo'Vaughn Martin, Fabian McCall, Tristyn Allen and Clayton Fritsch.
Each athlete has either broken a program record or moved their way into the record books this season.
Fritsch broke the school record in the pole vault during the Howie Ryan Invitational with a jump of 18' 2”. Jefferson set a school-record in the 60-meter dash with a run of 6.65. He also set a school record in the 200-meter race with a time of 20.67. His school record is followed by freshman Martin who recorded a time of 20.81 seconds.
Allen cemented herself in the program's record books in triple jump. She holds the first and second spots in the event. McCall set the school record in the 60-meter hurdles early in the season and is one of the athletes eyeing a mark to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
The Bearkats will look to get strong showings from everyone on the roster to end the indoor season with another championship.
