HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State Bearkats will be looking to get back in the win column on Wednesday night when they head to Lake Charles, La., to take on the McNeese Cowgirls at the brand-new Health & Human Performance Center.
The game is set to tip off at 6:30 p.m. at the Health & Human Performance Center in Lake Charles, the first-year home of Cowboy and Cowgirl basketball. The game can be watched on McNeeseSports.com ($) with live stats and Twitter updates also available.
The Bearkats are coming off a 78-68 loss to Stephen F. Austin, the second of the two unbeaten teams in league play that Sam Houston has had to face within the span of a week. Still, the Kats remain in the upper half of the league at the midway point of the conference slate in sixth place, 1.5 games ahead of the Cowgirls.
SHSU hit just 31.3 percent from the field and was 5-for-22 from 3-point range in the loss to the Ladyjacks, but stayed within striking distance thanks to its defense which forced SFA into a season-high 32 turnovers, double their season average and eight more than they had committed in any of their first 19 games of the year.
Jenniffer Oramas spearheaded that defensive effort, finishing with seven steals to go with her team-best 18 points.
The game with the Ladyjacks closed out a four-game home stretch for the Bearkats, while Wednesday's game at McNeese opens up a new stretch for SHSU that includes four of five games on the road.
The Kats will be searching for their first win over the Cowgirls since 2013 and the first win in Lake Charles since 2010. McNeese has won nine of the last 10 meetings in the series.
The Cowgirls struggled out of the gate this year, dropping 12 of their first 14 games; however, recent weeks have been a different story altogether. They followed up their 0-4 start in league play by winning three straight, including a big win at Nicholls, before having that streak snapped on Saturday against Lamar.
Still, McNeese gave the Cardinals a scare, falling just 67-64 in a game that was a one-point affair in the game's final minute on the Cowgirls' home floor.
