CONWAY, Ark. – The wins just keep on coming for the Sam Houston State women's basketball team as they had no problem with Central Arkansas on Saturday, blasting the Sugar Bears 72-54 at the Farris Center.
The win kept the Kats (11-4, 6-0 SLC) atop the Southland Conference standings and they are left as the lone team still unbeaten in conference play after Abilene Christian fell to A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday.
The 6-0 start marks the best start to Southland Conference play in program history, while the overall seven-game win streak is the longest for the program since the 1987-88 team won eight in a row.
SHSU used a big second quarter to and hit seven of their 10 threes in the first half to build up a 44-24 lead at the break before cruising to the finish line from there, forcing 25 Sugar Bear (7-8, 3-3 SLC) turnovers along the way.
Faith Cook and
Amber Leggett each had 13 points, pacing the Bearkat attack. Leggett also added seven rebounds to her ledger, while Cook did her damage in just 21 minutes, hitting a trio of 3-point buckets.
Jenniffer Oramas also added a dozen points and three assists, while
Jaylonn Walker had 11 points and four assists.
La'Sha Haynes also hit double figures on the glass for the second time in her last three games, picking up 10 rebounds to go with four points and three assists.
The Kats return home on Wednesday when they host Lamar before heading to Houston Baptist on Saturday. Wednesday's game vs Lamar is set for a 6:30 p.m. tip and can be watched on ESPN+.
