Initiative aims to promote student-athletes to vote

Sam Houston State student-athletes will be given a day off from sport-related activities on Nov. 3 as part of a nationwide diversity and inclusion initiative to promote student-athletes to take part in civic engagement by voting in the upcoming election.
The legislation to recognize the civil duty of student-athletes regarding voting was proposed by the NCAA National Student-Athlete Advisory committee and supported by the Division I Council and the Board of Governors. The Southland Conference's athletic directors also agreed that on Nov. 3 there will not be countable athletically related activities (CARA) for league universities.
"It is very important that our student-athletes have the opportunity to exercise their freedom to vote on Election Day," said Bobby Williams, SHSU's director of athletics. "This is something that our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee really stands behind and they have our full support. We will not have any athletic activities on Nov. 3 so that our student-athletes will have time to go vote around their class schedule."
The SHSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is dedicated to providing the opportunity for student-athletes to have a quality academic and athletic experience that will culminate in graduation from Sam Houston.
In discussions with Williams about the campaign, it was relayed to the SAAC that as student-athletes is was important to formulate the decision to vote, understand what change they can be a part of and know the difference between talk and action. The SAAC has taken the necessary steps to make sure student-athletes have been informed on voter registration, absentee voting and the poll process.
"The diversity and inclusion campaign is important because it showcases student-athletes and who they are outside of their respective sport," said Ryan Humphrey, the president of SHSU's SAAC. "Student-athletes are more than just athletes. Together, student-athletes across the nation can promote excellence across their campuses."
