Kats putting together productive fall practice

HUNTSVILLE – In being one of only seven Southland Conference schools opting for the opportunity to compete for a championship in the spring, the Sam Houston Bearkat football team has still taken full advantage of its autumn as it closes out on-field practices in preparation for the start of Spring 2021 season in February.
Â
"We will have put in 15 very productive practices after our scrimmage on Friday," head coach K.C. Keeler said. "It's been awesome getting the veterans back up to speed and productive for our freshmen and transfers who are all new to our program."
Â
The Kats, who were one of four Southland teams to be ranked in the STATS FCS preseason top 25 before the majority of FCS schools opted to compete in the spring semester due to the COVID-19 pandemic, are set to complete its fall season on Friday with its third scrimmage of the fall.
Â
Friday's third scrimmage will mark the final of 15 practices during the month of October, replacing the normal spring practice with the competition season being postponed until the spring.
Â
Following the completion of practice the Kats will return to primarily a strength and conditioning schedule through the rest of the semester and into January before opening up spring practice on January 22.
Â
"As important as these practices are, it's still very important for us to turn things back over to our strength coach, Parker Whiteman, on Saturday," Keeler said. "He is going to have these guys in game shape and ready to go when the season starts and we go after a championship trophy in February."
Â
Aside from football, the Kats also have taken time to address issues away from the field, including racial injustice issues that have swept across the country in recent months. Throughout the month the team has taken part in a Racial Injustice Education Program led by running backs coach Chris Buckner and defensive line coach Siddiq Haynes that has featured frank conversations, education and sharing on these issues.
Â
The Kats are currently set to open up its six-game spring schedule on February 20 at UIW before hosting Southeastern Louisiana on February 27 in the home opener.
