OTD: Piney Woods streak begins with 45-10 rout

The Sam Houston State football team has won nine straight Battle of the Piney Woods showdowns against rival Stephen F. Austin, and it began at a time the program was embarking on a historic run.

On this date in 2011, Richard Sincere rushed for 111 yards and two touchdowns to lead the No. 1 ranked Bearkats to a 45-10 shellacking of the Lumberjacks in front of a record crowd of 25,083 fans at Reliant Stadium. The win broke a three-game Battle of the Piney Woods losing streak to SFA.

SHSU took advantage of five Lumberjack turnovers, including four interceptions. Linebacker Darius Taylor had two of the picks as the Kats held SFA to 274 yards of total offense.

Southland Conference leading rusher Timothy Flanders also score two touchdowns on the ground as SHSU broke open a close game at the half with five unanswered touchdowns to start the second half.

Quarterback Brian Bell tossed a 49-yard touchdown pass to Torrance Williams and later connected with Keith Blanton for a 55-yard score to start the third quarter.

The Kats would go on to win the SLC championship and make the program's first-ever appearance in the FCS national championship game.
