Slow start dooms Kats in Lubbock

LUBBOCK — A slow offensive start to the first half doomed the Sam Houston State men's basketball team in an 84-52 loss to No. 14 Texas Tech at United Supermarkets Arena Friday.

Junior Zach Nutall led the Bearkats (0-2) with 14 points, two days after scoring a career-high 36 points in a road loss to SMU in Dallas. Senior Demarkus Lampley scored 12 points and true freshman Bryce Monroe added 11 to give SHSU three players in double-digit scoring.

The Red Raiders held the Bearkats to just 20.8 percent shooting in the first half to take a 43-15 lead into the break. SHSU shot the ball better in the second half (40.0 percent) to keep pace with Texas Tech, which only outscored the Kats 41-37 in the period, but the first-half deficit was too much to overcome.

Georgetown transfer Mac McClung led the Red Raiders (2-0) with 18 points, and VCU transfer Marcus Santos-Silva chipped in 12.

Junior Tristan Ikpe added seven points and six rebounds for Sam Houston State, which will face Boise State at Dickie's Arena in Fort Worth Sunday at 1 p.m.
