Nutall nabs first SLC weekly honor

FRISCO — For the first time in his career, Sam Houston State junior Zach Nutall has been named the Southland Conference men's basketball Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.

Nutall had three solid performances as the Bearkats dropped two road games at LSU and No. 11 Texas and picked up a win over Rice at home. He averaged 20 points per game to extend his streak of double-digit scoring outings to 23 dating back to last season and 4.7 rebounds.

Nutall began the week with 13 points in an 88-66 setback at LSU on Dec. 14, his lowest output of the week. The game was added to the Bearkats' schedule on Dec. 9.

Against the Longhorns on Dec. 16, the SLC's leading scorer dropped 23 points, hit four of six 3-pointers, had four rebounds, 1.5 blocks and two steals in a 79-63 loss at the Erwin Center in Austin. He followed that with a 24-point, seven-rebound performance in an 82-69 victory over Rice at Johnson Coliseum on Dec. 19.

For the week, the Bryan High School product shot 46.7 percent from the floor and 38.9 from 3-point range.
