Mitchell garners third weekly SLC honor

FRISCO — After guiding Sam Houston State to a pair of victories last week, including a 30-point performance on his birthday, senior Kai Mitchell has been named the Southland Conference men's basketball Player of the Week, the leagued announced Monday.

The Haverstraw, New York native had a huge week for the Bearkats, scoring a career-high 30 points Saturday with eight rebounds in the SHSU's 82-67 win over Central Arkansas. He also had three assists, two blocks and was 3 for 4 from 3-point range.

On Feb. 12, he scored 15 points to help the Bearkats snap a three-game losing streak on the road at Southeastern Louisiana with a 79-70 victory. For the week, Mitchell averaged 22.5 points, six boards and 2.5 assists per game.

This is the third weekly award Mitchell has earned this season and fourth of his career.

In December, Mitchell posted a double-double with a then career-high 27 points and 13 rebounds in the SHSU's 75-61 win over Rice in Houston on Dec. 29 to earn Player of the Week.

On Dec. 3, he posted a double-double by scoring 18 points and pulling down a career-high 19 rebounds in a double-overtime loss at UTRGV and just missed another double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds in the Bearkats' win over Louisiana Tech at Johnson Coliseum on Dec. 8 to earn his first Player of the Week award this season.
