Houston tops Bearkats 11-3

HOUSTON – The Sam Houston State Bearkats fell to the Houston Cougars 11-3 in six innings on Wednesday evening.

Originally slated to be played in Huntsville, the game was moved to Cougars Stadium due to inclement weather.

Although the Bearkats had two more hits than the Cougars, it was the long ball that was the difference, with the Cougars launching four home runs out of the park. Sam Houston State fell to 4-7 on the season and will head to Baton Rouge, Louisiana where they will play four games, partaking in the LSU Purple and Gold Challenge.

The Bearkats scored first, plating a pair of runs in the top of the second with the help of singles from junior Madilyn Weatherly, junior Sheridan Fisher and senior Megan McDonald.

Weatherly had herself a three-hit night, with singles in the second, third and fifth innings. McDonald, freshman Emily Grill and Fisher each notched a pair of hits.

Annie Bailey (0-2) was given the nod in the circle, but after the Cougars hit a couple of long balls to put them up 4-2, Brooklyn Devine took over. Devine pitched 1.3 of an inning, but the Cougars offense plated two more runs off a few walks, a hit by pitch and a double to center field.

Sophomore Reagan Dunn would then come in to finish out the game, pitching 2 2/3 innings with four hits, five runs and two strikeouts.

Houston's offense proved to be too much, plating two runs in the second, four runs in the third and five runs in the sixth to put the run-rule into effect. Cougars starting pitcher Megan Lee gave up a run in the fifth, but finished the night with seven strikeouts to earn the win.
