Kats snap long losing streak to Aggies

COLLEGE STATION – For the first time in 25 years, the Sam Houston State softball team walked away victorious against Texas A&M Wednesday after splitting a doubleheader with the Aggies at Davis Diamond.

In the first game, Texas A&M walked it off in the bottom of the seventh with a fielder's choice RBI to win 4-3.

Game two was a different story, as the Bearkats (7-10) came together to win 6-3 off 12 hits, breaking a previous 51-game losing streak against the Aggies.

Game 1 • Texas A&M 4, Sam Houston State 3

In the first game of the day, it was a pitchers' dual the first six innings as both teams were notched up 0-0.

It wouldn't be until the top of the sixth that the Bearkats would plate the first run of the game. Madilyn Weatherly reached on a fielding error, which would bring in Tiffany Thompson to score.

The Aggies came storming back in the bottom of the sixth, plating three of their own runs off a couple of singles, a wild pitch and a home run.

Not done quite yet, the Bearkats came out in the top of the seventh with their rally caps on to tie things up 3-3. Kyndal Kutac started the inning off with a double to right field, and with the help of a walk from Hunter Ervin, a single by Megan McDonald and a fielding error against the Aggies.

Texas A&M would come out victorious in the bottom of the seventh, when a leadoff single to center would be brought in by a fielder's choice.

Senior Karina Sanchez (1-3) started the game, pitching 6 1/3 innings with three strikeouts, seven hits and four runs.

Game 2 • Sam Houston State 6, Texas A&M 3
The Bearkats ended the night on a sweet note, snapping a 51-game losing streak against the Aggies in the second game of the day. Five Bearkats, McDonald, Thompson, Kutac, Sheridan Fisher and Emily Telg, had a multi-hit game.
The last time Sam Houston State defeated Texas A&M was 7-1 on Feb. 14, 1995 in Huntsville.

Sophomore Regan Dunn got the start in the circle, pitching four innings with two hits, three strikeouts and three runs.

A hit by pitch, a walk and a double to center field helped the Aggies score their first run in the bottom of the first.

Sam Houston answered with two runs of their own in the top of the second. Fisher singled down the right-field line, and Telg reached on a throwing error by the catcher. Fisher would score after Ervin hit a shot up the middle. Another single from McDonald would then score one more run, putting the Bearkats up 2-1.

Sam Houston's lead wouldn't last for long though, as the Aggies would score two runs in the bottom of the third, going up 3-2. The bottom of the third would be the last inning the Aggies would score, though, as junior pitcher Annie Bailey checked into the ballgame to shut the Aggie offense down, going three innings with two hits.

Sam Houston came right back in the top of the fourth, plating two runs thanks to a single from McDonald and a double from Thompson. The Bearkats plated two more runs in the top of the fifth with the help of singles from Kutac and Fisher.

The Bearkats defense held strong through the sixth and seventh, closing things out and earning the win.

This weekend, the Bearkats return to action when they host the Bearkat Invitational. They match up against North Dakota State on Friday, first pitch at 6:30 p.m.
