It is hard to believe it is already February. Seems like it was just yesterday we were wrapping up our fall sports. Now here we are with basketball in the middle of a conference championship race on both the men's and women's side, bowling, tennis and track have started their spring seasons and golf, baseball and softball are about to get underway.Â
Â
We are always striving to improve the fans experience at our events. Sometimes it happens through facility renovations like we had recently at Johnson Coliseum. Other times it's through an enhancement with our concession stands, which we feel we are getting with the change to Aramark as our concession stand vendor. We are excited to partner with Aramark and University Dining services as well as our Finance and Operations department on campus.
Â
The plan is to improve and modernize the menu, as well as look to future improvements to the concession facilities, starting with the baseball and softball games next week. While the regular concession items like hot dogs and nachos will still be available, we are going to get a beefed up menu as well. Through different themed days, new food items will include quesadillas, BBQ, steak and shrimp sandwiches and a couple of different burger options.Â
Â
The next two months are always the busiest for us as a department and it feels like I'm at a game or event every night. Over the years, when I'm in the stands or walking the concourse at a stadium, there are a few questions that I get asked repeatedly as the athletic director. The one that seems to come up the most is about beer and alcohol sales in our concession stands.Â
Â
It might also be a topic we have discussed over the years just as many times as the question has been asked by our fans. We have looked at the pros and cons of alcohols sales over the years and never felt like it was a good time for our university.Â
Â
Over the years we have slowly phased in alcohol sales at our special events and premium seating areas at our games with positive results. With the recent change in our concession vendor to Aramark, we will be offering beer and wine sales through the concession stands starting this spring for baseball and softball games. We are happy this service will be in place for both the softball home opener on Feb. 12 and baseball's opening day on Feb. 14.
Â
This is just another enhancement to the Bearkat experience for our fans as we strive to improve your visit to our games every time you come to Huntsville.Â
