HOUSTON — The Sam Houston State tennis team fell 5-2 on the road to Rice at the George R. Brown Tennis Center Sunday morning.
Juniors
Sahaja Yamalapalli and
Roos Gerritsen won their singles matches to highlight the action for the Bearkats (4-4).
In No. 1 singles, Yamalapalli bounced back from her first loss of the season Friday at SMU to defeat Rice's Victoria Smirnova in straight sets 6-4, 6-1. She is now 7-1 on the season.
Gerritsen look Linda Huang's best shot in No. 5 singles. She outlasted Huang 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8).
In No. 2 singles, sophomore
Isidora Zivkovic fell to Michaela Haet 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), and senior
Lusine Chobanyan lost to Priya Niezgoda 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3.
Freshman
Emma Goedkoop dropped her No. 4 singles match to Anna Bowtell 6-2, 6-4, and sophomore
Petra Kaszas fell to Maria Budin 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.
The Owls won at No. 2 and 3 doubles 6-0 to take the doubles point.
The Bearkats return to action Friday when they travel to San Antonio to play UTSA at 2 p.m.
