Spring sports activities suspension extended

FRISCO — The Southland Conference office announced Thursday that all team activities, organized or voluntary, have been suspended indefinitely as the country continues to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Â
The extended suspension was discussed during a teleconference Wednesday between league officials and the conference's athletic directors. The SLC had previously decided to cancel all remaining spring sports competitions and championship and postpone spring activities until at least March 30 earlier this month after the NCAA decided to cancel its spring championships.
Â
In addition to all organized team activities for the current in-season spring sports, Sam Houston State has canceled the remainder of spring football practice and the annual spring game.
Â
"First and foremost, all decisions have been made with everyone's health and safety as the main priority. We support the Southland Conference's decision in that all spring activities should be suspended until it is deemed safe for our student-athletes, coaches and staff to resume participation," SHSU director of athletics Bobby Williams said. "Their safety is of the upmost importance, so we will take every precaution necessary to limit their exposure to the coronavirus. Things are constantly changing in these challenging times, and we will continue to monitor the situation and act accordingly."
