WBB adds three transfer guards

HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State women's basketball coach Ravon Justice added some scoring prowess to next year's roster on Monday, announcing the addition of a trio of transfer guards Jolicia Williams, Jacquelyn Levay and Damaya Telemaque for the 2020-21 season.

Justice on Williams: "Jolie is a tough kid with a great work ethic. She has the ability to be a good scorer and defender and is very lethal with the ball in her hands. Jolie is a competitor and loves competing."

A native of Natchitoches, La., Williams earned NJCAA All-Region XXIII honors last year in leading Southwest Mississippi CC to a 17-9 record as a sophomore in 2019-20. She led the Lady Bears in scoring with 14.8 points per game in addition to 3.5 rebounds and a season high of 28 points in a win at Hinds CC in January.

She made her way to Southwest after a year at Panola College in 2018-19 where she averaged 10.8 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game for the Fillies. That came after an outstanding prep career at Natchitoches Central HS where she was a three-time all-state selection.

Williams also earned all-district and all-area honors each of those years while being named District MVP in 2018. An LHSAA All-Star as a senior, that season she was also named the Shreveport Times Player of the Year.

Justice on Williams: "Jay is a person of high character on and off the court. She has the ability to be a good shooter in our system and has a good basketball IQ, which allows her to be a playmaker at times."

The Kats added more firepower to the backcourt with Levay who was named to the All-Suncoast Conference first team as a sophomore. One of the top 3-point shooters in the nation in the JuCo ranks last year, the Tampa native hit 41.6 percent of her shots from long range for the year.

She averaged 11.9 points per game for the year to go with 3.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists as a sophomore, surging her to first team all-league honors in 2019-20. That came after earning second team honors as a freshman in 2018-19 when she averaged 12.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game.

A standout at Alonso HS, she averaged 16.2 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.6 rebounds per game as a senior for the Ravens on her way to earning all-Hillsborough County first team honors.

Damaya Telemaque • G • 5-8 • Houston, Texas • Summer Creek HS / South Alabama
Justice on Williams: "Damaya will bring a tremendous amount of experience to our program. She's a hard worker on and off the court which speaks volumes about her maturity. She can score the basketball in various ways and will compete every day, and those are the kids we love."

Telemaque will have two years left with the Kats after spending the last two seasons at South Alabama. She started 61 games over the past two seasons with the Jags, including 31 as a true freshman in 2018-19.

She started 30 games as a sophomore where she averaged 8.0 points and 3.1 rebounds per contest. That came on the heels of a true freshman season that saw her rank seventh in the Sun Belt with 3.4 assists per game, while also averaging 8.9 points and 4.2 rebounds that season in helping USA to a 25-win season and a run to the SBC Tournament championship game and the second round of the WNIT.

Originally a Houston native, Telemaque helped lead Summer Creek HS to three consecutive berths in the state playoffs while earning such team honors as team MVP (2016 -17), Offensive Player of the Year (2015-16), Defensive Player of the Year (2016-17) and being named first team all-district. She was the first ever freshman to play on varsity at Summer Creek and averaged better than 10 points per game as both a junior and senior for the Bulldogs.
