Kats snag two preseason all-America honors from HERO Sports

HUNTSVILLE – Seniors Trace Mascorro and Colby Thomas landed the first preseason honors for the 2020 season for the Sam Houston football team when they were named to the HERO Sports preseason all-America team on Thursday.

Mascorro, the 2019 Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year, was named to the second team while Thomas earned a third team nod. Both players were first team all-SLC choices a year ago.

HERO Sports also released its preseason top 25 poll with the Kats checking in at No. 23 as one of two Southland teams in the poll.

In his first year following a transfer after a two-year stint at UTEP, Mascorro made an immediate impact on the Bearkat defense, helping it transform into one of the top units in the nation in 2019. He started all 12 games on the defensive line and finished with 41 tackles and 15.5 TFLs, including 5.0 sacks and a pair of forced fumbles.

Thomas, meanwhile, anchored the Bearkat offensive line by starting all 12 games at both center and guard on his way to earning all-SLC honors for the first time. He was the only non-senior to start on the line for the first 10 games of the 2019 season.

The Kats are coming off a 7-5 season in 2019, the tenth consecutive winning season for the program. They are currently scheduled to open up the 2020 season by hosting Tarleton State on September 5 at Bowers Stadium.
