OTD: Late field goal lifts Kats past Bison
9/12/2020 9:00:00 AM | Football, Athletics
North Dakota State has had the Bearkats' number on the football field in five of the six meetings between the national powers, but on Sept. 12, 2009, Sam Houston State came out on top.
Â
Quarterback Blake Joseph and wide receiver Jason Madkins hooked up for a 51-yard pass to set up freshman Miquel Antonio's game-winning field goal as the Bearkats battled tooth and nail for a 48-45 victory over the Bison at Bowers Stadium. It is SHSU's only win over North Dakota State in the program's history.
Â
The Bearkats rolled to 620 yards of total offense and the defense didn't let the Bison steal this one away like the 2007 meeting at the Fargodome when North Dakota State scored the game-winning touchdown in the final seconds.
Â
The Bearkats got breakout performances from Joseph and Madkins.
Â
Joseph, who transferred from Houston, threw for 482 yards, which is the eighth-best single game total in school history, to go along with two touchdowns. He was also efficient, completing 24-of-36, or 67 percent, of his passing attempts.
Â
Joseph's primary target was Madkins. The senior from Mart finished with six catches for 239 yards and a score.
Â
Madkins fell three yards shy of matching then Jonathan Cooper's school record for most receiving yards in a game set against Western Illinois in 2001. Madkins' performance now stands as fourth best in school history behind Cooper and Nathan Stewart who holds the top two spots with 268 against McNeese in 2016 and 247 against Northwestern State in 2017.
Â
Running back James Aston scored two rushing touchdowns and had one receiving, while freshman Chris Poullard also ran one in from three yards out. Wide receiver Darnell Jones hauled in seven passes for 104 yards.
