OTD: Kats upset No. 1 Montana 41-29

The Sam Houston State football team had a historic run in 2004, eventually making the program's first appearance in the semifinals of the Division I-AA playoffs and the signs of what was to come began on Sept. 18.

The Bearkats welcomed No. 1 Montana to Bowers Stadium sixteen years ago in a Fox regional broadcasted game and it was a day for the record book. Sam Houston State rolled up 512 yards of total offense en route to a 41-29 upset.

Senior quarterback Dustin Long threw for 329 yards and two touchdowns as the Kats picked up their first-ever victory over a team ranked No. 1 in the country. Jarrod Fuller was on the receiving end of 10 passes for 113 yards and added a 19-yard rushing score, and running back Stevie Smith ran for 113 yards and two touchdowns.

SHSU jumped out to a 20-0 lead on a couple of rushing touchdowns by Smith and Robert Garmon and a 17-yard receiving score by Vincent Cartwright. The Bearkats also scored on a 27-yard pass from Long to wide receiver Jason Mathenia, who finished with five catches for 102 yards.

The Sam Houston State defense held the Griz to 352 yards of total offense.
