OTD: Flanders breaks SLC career rushing record

There is a reason Timothy Flanders is one of the best running backs in the history of the Southland Conference, and he proved on Sept. 21, 2013.

Flanders became the league's all-time rushing leader in Sam Houston State's 52-21 win against Incarnate Word when he ran for 157 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. He passed Claude Mathis of Southwest Texas with a 41-yard touchdown run in the third quarter before setting the new league record at 4,720 yards.

"It feels good," Flanders said at the time of breaking the SLC rushing record. "The offensive line did a very good job. I slapped every last one of them in the hand, all of the teammates to congratulate everybody. I feel blessed to be in this position. It's over with now. It's on to the next game."

Flanders, who led the Bearkats to back-to-back Football Championship Subdivision title games, finished his career with 5,664 rushing yards. He also holds the SLC career rushing attempts (999) and rushing touchdown (66) records.
