Nicholls stuns Kats in SLC opener

THIBODAUX, La. – It was not a kind start to 2021 for the Sam Houston women's basketball team as the Nicholls Colonels stunned the Bearkats with a 89-82 win on Saturday afternoon at Stopher Gym.

The Colonels (2-6, 1-0 SLC) took the lead late in the second quarter and despite the Kats (4-3, 0-1 SLC) pulling even three times in the fourth quarter, never trailed the rest of the way.

Sam Houston was its own worst enemy throughout the day, turning the ball over a season-high 28 times, including 19 in the opening half. Jolicia Williams and Courtney Cleveland each put in 20 points for the Kats, and freshman Diamond Hunter had a season-high 12 off the bench.

But Nicholls, who entered the day averaging just 58.1 points per game for the year, shot nearly 50 percent from the floor and got a huge game from Chelsea Cain. In all, Cain finished with 29 points and 13 rebounds, while hitting all 13 of her shots from the charity stripe.

The Kats were kept in check offensively for the majority of the first half, but still had as much as a 24-20 lead in the second quarter after a 7-0 run that was sparked by a 3-point play by Jolicia Williams and a bucket from Kaylee Jefferson.

Much of that roadblock was due in part to 19 first-half turnovers by the Kats, but they were still able to stay within a 42-34 deficit on the scoreboard thanks in large part to 15 points in the half from Cleveland.

Williams kept the Kats in it in the third quarter, pumping in 14 of her points in that period to keep Sam Houston in it. Sam Houston then had things knotted up on multiple occasions in the fourth quarter, including as late as 80-80; however, the Colonels closed things out on a 9-2 run that included a big 3-point bucket from Adrian Mann that proved to be the game's dagger.

Sam Houston will now return to Johnson Coliseum to take host Southeastern Louisiana on Wednesday. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. and will be aired on ESPN+.

Fans are reminded that tickets are only available in advance and those in attendance must adhere to all SHSU and Southland Conference COVID-19 protocols.
