Fritsch earns weekly indoor T&F honor

FRISCO — After a strong showing to begin the indoor track and field season, Sam Houston senior Clayton Fritsch has been named the Southland Conference field Athlete of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.

Competing in his first indoor meet of the season, Fritsch had the top height in the pole vault at the Ted Nelson Invitational hosted by Texas A&M Saturday. His vault of 17 feet, 9 inches was four inches better than the second-place finisher.

He competed against athletes from the SEC, Pac 12, Southland Conference and Sun Belt.

Fritsch was set to compete in the 2020 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships before the event was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic in March. He was seeded eighth with a height of 5.55 meters, which he reached at the Texas A&M Invitational on Feb. 22, 2020.

Fritsch earned All-America honors for the 2020 NCAA Division I indoor track and field season from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
