Volleyball ready to open Spring 2021 season

HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston volleyball Spring 2021 season is set to get under way with a pair of matches at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum next week, starting with the season opener on Tuesday against Central Arkansas.

Tickets for Bearkat Volleyball will only be sold in advance for the Spring 2021 season and walk-up sales will not be permitted. All tickets must be purchased in advance online or over the phone with all transactions to be completed by noon on gameday.

Fans can contact the Sam Houston Athletic Ticket Office at 936-294-1729 for all ticket information. Fans should also be aware of all COVID-19 protocols at Sam Houston State University and Johnson Coliseum upon arrival and are required to adhere to those guidelines while in attendance.

Each match next week is scheduled to be aired on ESPN+ and can also be followed with live stats via Statbroadcast or with in-match updates from @BearkatsVB on Twitter.

Sam Houston was originally scheduled to play its season in the fall, but like so many others around the nation had its plans altered due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Kats will now take part in a 12-match regular season with each match being within Southland Conference play.

The regular season will culminate in the annual Southland Conference Tournament, an 8-team event being held this year in Corpus Christi from April 1-3 with the winner earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Kats advanced to the finals of the SLC Tournament in 2019 and were picked second in this year's preseason poll, behind only defending champion Stephen F. Austin.

Much of that confidence comes from 11 returners from that squad, including three preseason all-SLC choices. Outside hitters Ashley Lewis and Breanne Chausse were each named to the preseason all-SLC first team after earning all-league honors in 2019, while Catherine Krieger made enough of an impression in her first season to get a preseason second-team nod of her own.

That trio, helped the Kats lead the Southland with 13.42 kills per set as a team in 2019. They, along with returning outside hitter Samantha Rodgers and middle blockers Elise Smith, Kaira Hunnicutt and De'Janae Gilmore give plenty of potential targets for returning setters Morgan Janda and Madilyn Miles in what could be an even more dynamic offense this season.

Defensively, they are faced with replacing seniors Ashleigh Traylor and 2019 SLC Libero of the Year Addison Miller, but return Sawyer Nowak and Samantha Boatman who each saw time on the back row a year ago.

Head coach Brenda Gray, who is entering her 38th year at the helm of the program, also has added five newcomers to the roster with Makensie Garner and Hannah Baker immediately adding to the back row and middle blocker McKenzie Morvant impacting things up front. Add in outside hitters Arianne Renaud and Rayna Williams and the Kats should boast plenty of depth on offense this season.
