PHOENIX, Ariz. – Ashley Lewis finished with 11 kills and 13 digs, but Grand Canyon held serve on its home court with a 3-0 win on Thursday night to open up the Phoenix Pod at GCU Arena.
The Lopes (13-5, 5-3 WAC), who were coming off a recent win over New Mexico State, were able to extend its home win streak to 15 matches in a row in what was just the second-ever match between the two schools.
The Kats (11-7, 4-2 WAC) had a shot to jump out to a 1-0 lead in a back-and-forth first set that that went to extra points, but a pair of service errors on set-point tries spoiled things for Sam Houston and eventually set the stage for the Lopes to steal the opening stanza.
Lewis had six of her 11 kills in that opening set, with
Breanne Chausse adding five of her seven kills for the match.
In all the Kats hit just .067 for the match with GCU winning the battle at the net with 12.0 blocks to just 6.0 for SHSU.
McKenzie Wise finished with a match-high 12 kills for the Lopes, while setter Klaire Mitchell had 38 assists in the 3-set affair.
For the Kats,
Morgan Janda and
Jenna Roberson combined for 26 assists, while
Hannah Baker tied Lewis for team-high honors with 13 digs.
De'Janae Gilmore had three kills and three blocks to go along with a career-high 12 digs of her own.
Sam Houston will continue its weekend in the Phoenix Pod on Friday when it takes on New Mexico State. First serve is set for 8:00 p.m. CT and will be aired on the WAC Digital Network.
