ABILENE — Utah Valley scored three goals in both halves to pull away from the Sam Houston soccer team for a 6-1 victory at the 2021 Western Athletic Conference Tournament at Abilene Christian's Elmer Gray Stadium on Wednesday.
Freshman
Summer Knox got the Bearkats (8-10) on the board with a powerful goal in the 53
rd minute. She had the ball at the top of the box then drilled a shot under the crossbar in the middle of the net to cut the lead to 3-1.
Utah Valley (12-6-2) took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute of the match. Nicole Olanda's shot deflected off a defender and caught Bearkat goalkeeper
Tatum Krueger off guard as it snuck into the right corner of the net.
The Wolverines added another goal in the 29
th minute. Again, there wasn't much Krueger could do as Sadie Brockbank sailed a shot from the top left corner of the box just under the crossbar.
It appeared Sam Houston would go into halftime down 2-0, but WAC Freshman of the Year Breanna Eves scored on a header in the 45
th minute.
Brockbank scored again in the 64
th minute to push Utah Valley's lead back to three at 4-1. The Wolverine's final two goals were scored by Amber Tripp in the 70
th minute and Manthy Brady in the 76
th minute.
