Kats outlast Lady Lions in five sets

HAMMOND, La. – The Sam Houston Bearkat volleyball team picked up the 600th win in program history in dramatic fashion on Monday afternoon, outlasting Southeastern Louisiana, 3-2 (20-25, 25-22, 25-12, 18-25, 15-10) at the University Center.

The Kats (3-1, 3-1 SLC) earned their third straight win of the spring season and 15th straight over the Lady Lions (2-2, 1-1 SLC) with each of the last three in the series coming in the full five sets.

The win also comes on the heels of a hectic week that saw Sam Houston's schedule altered multiple times, mainly due to the recent winter storm that swept through the area.

Ashley Lewis picked up another double-double with match highs of both 15 kills and 18 digs, while Catherine Krieger delivered 11 kills on 25 swings of her own.

Morgan Janda also had a double-double of her own with 34 assists and 11 digs as one of five Kats in double-figure digs. Hannah Baker added 17 in that category, Makensie Garner 13 and Samantha Boatman 10 in a match that saw the Kats out-dig SLU by an 88-74 margin.

That effort, along with eight blocks, helped SHSU hold the Lady Lions to just .158 hitting in the match with only one player reaching double-figure kills.

The Kats had to play from behind early after the Lady Lions held the Bearkats to just .059 hitting in the opening set, forcing eight SHSU attack errors. SLU got three kills from Karlee Wilkerson in the set and scored five of the set's final seven points to go up 1-0.

Sam Houston rallied, however, and pulled away in the final points of the second set to even things up at 1-1. A set later the Kats dominated their way to a 2-1 lead, hitting .387 to go up 2-1, but responded on the opposite end of the spectrum with -.100 hitting and eight errors in the fourth set.

The teams were neck and neck midway through the final set before the Kats went on the run they needed, getting six of the final eight points of the match and ending it on a kill on the right side from Samantha Rodgers.

The Kats will now look to their next match, scheduled for Thursday at Houston Baptist.
