There have been some very talented players come through the SHSU soccer program the past 10 years. It was difficult narrowing it down, but over the next few weeks the 2010-20 All-Decade team will be announced.
Â
Here are the first four former student-athletes of the 12-member team.
Â
Kylie Hambleton, goalkeeper
Hambleton played 72 matches in goal in four seasons with the Bearkats from 2012-15. In 6,503 minutes, she compiled 362 saves with a season high of 113 in 2013. She faced 1,052 shots and had a career save percentage of 81.7. The three-time All-Southland Conference honoree posted a career record of 29-29-9 with 24 shutouts.
Â
Hambleton, who helped lead the Bearkats to the Southland Conference Tournament finals as a senior in 2015, now works as a project manager at a software company headquartered in The Woodlands. She and her wife got married in 2018 and have one son with another child on the way. She lives in Willis.
Â
"Kylie was a steady presence for us in the goal," head coach Tom Brown said. "She was a great shot stopper and leader from the back."
Â
Kayla Anderson, defender
Anderson had a breakout season as a starter in 2012 with three goals and two assists. The two-time All-SLC selection started 46 games in her four-year career from 2009-2012. She scored four career goals on 15 shots on goal and had four assists for 12 career points.
Â
After graduating with a degree in education, Anderson taught pre-K for 4 years. She got married in 2019. She and her husband have two wonderful children. Her husband is in the military and they now live in Louisiana. She currently works at Alexandra Country Day School as a PE teacher. She coaches soccer for the school and club.Â
Â
"Kayla was a strong presence in the back for four years," Brown said. "She did great getting forward on set pieces."
Â
Megan Bennett, defender
Bennett was a two-time All-SLC selection while starting 36 games for the Bearkats from 2013-16. She made 76 appearances and had three goals and two assists in her career. She recorded eight career points and scored a goal on a penalty kick as a freshman. She helped lead Sam Houston to the SLC tournament finals as a junior in 2015.
Â
After college, Bennett went and played professionally in Sweden. She returned home and obtained her real estate license and currently resides in The Woodlands. She is looking to go back overseas to play again.Â
Â
"Megan was always a string defender who could get forward into the attack," Brown said. "She was always watching soccer and looking to improve her knowledge about her position."
Â
Caitlin Schwartz, defender
Schwartz played at Sam Houston for two years before transferring to Baylor University. She was a first-team All-SLC honoree who started all 21 matches while anchoring a back line that allowed just 0.83 goals per match and posted nine shutouts as a sophomore in 2015. She also was named SLC Defender of the Week that season and helped the Bearkats to three clean sheets at the Southland Tournament as the team advanced to the league championship match.
Â
Schwartz graduated from Baylor in 2017 and worked as a physical therapist in Lubbock. She has since moved to Austin where she works as a teacher and soccer coach at Vandegrift High School.
Â
"Although she only played two years for us, she made an immediate impact in the team," Brown said. "She was a strong presence in the back and was able to help build our attack from the back."
