ABILENE – The Sam Houston women's basketball team took control early and never let up on Wednesday night, completing a season sweep of Abilene Christian with a 75-55 win at the Teague Center.
The Kats (12-6, 8-4 SLC) currently hold sole possession of second place in the Southland Conference based on the point system released by the league earlier in the week.
Amber Leggett and
Madelyn Batista led the way with 19 points apiece on a night that saw SHSU hit 49.2 percent from the floor, only attempting five tries from beyond the arc. They also harassed ACU (12-7, 5-5 SLC) throughout the night, forcing 30 Wildcat turnovers that were converted into 23 Bearkat points.
Leggett added five rebounds and three steals to her line, while Batista added eight boards to her career-best point total.
Courtney Cleveland played a big hand in the fast start and finished with 16 points and three steals, while
Jolicia Williams had seven points in the first quarter and finished with nine for the game.
Faith Cook finished with just seven points after going for 23 on Monday vs Lamar, but dished out seven assists.
Sam Houston hit 11-for-16 from the field and 6-for-6 from the line in the opening quarter, taking a 28-15 lead after one period and held a solid 42-28 lead at the break before essentially putting the game away in the third quarter.
The Bearkats are now scheduled to have a week off before returning to action on March 3 at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
