Statement from Director of Athletics, Bobby Williams, regarding COVID-19 Protocols at Bearkat Athletics venues and events.
"It is an exciting time to be a Bearkat! In addition to recent announcements concerning our move to the WAC and renovation beginning on Mafrige Fieldhouse, we will soon have all 17 of our sports competing at the same time. While we are looking forward to all of that, it will also create some unique challenges. Â
Â
We want to be able to have fans come to games and enjoy watching our student-athletes do what they do best, which is compete for championships! So I am asking all fans who are planning to attend our games to adhere to the COVID-19 protocols that are in place for each sport. These protocols were made collaboratively at the university, local, state and sometimes, even the national level. As a government entity, we are required to abide by and enforce them.Â
Â
Because our staff will be spread out across multiple venues on the same day, they need to be hyper-focused on their game-day duties. They do not need to be taken away to address situations regarding failures to adhere to the COVID-19 protocols. The potential alternative is to not allow fans in our venues as many schools across the country have chosen to do. Our student-athletes have had a lot of opportunities taken away from them since last March. I'm asking you to help ensure that they do not have the chance to safely play with friends and family in attendance taken away as well."
Statement from Ryan Humphries, President of SHSUÂ Student-Athlete Advisory CouncilÂ
"We as student-athletes are grateful for the opportunity to play the sports that we love this spring. Part of the student-athlete experience is the love and support from Bearkat fans. We ask that you follow all COVID-19 protocols when attending any Bearkat sporting event. By doing your part, this will help to ensure a safe and successful season. Wear a mask, social distance, and go Bearkats."Â
