
Final 5 named to soccer All-Decade Team

Here are the final five members of the Sam Houston soccer 2010-20 All-Decade Team.

Tricia Mallory, midfielder
Mallory had a historic career at Sam Houston, earning All-Southland Conference honors each season, including the 2010 Freshman of the Year. She is second all-time in goals scored with 26 and is ranked third in most goals scored in a season with 11 as a freshman.

She was also named to the SLC all-tournament team in 2013 and is tied for third all-times in career assists with 11 at SHSU.

Mallory received her CPA license and works as a financial controller of an oil and gas services company headquartered in Midland. She married Nate Dougherty in 2019 and they reside in Dripping Springs.

"Tricia was a huge impact player while she was here," head coach Tom Brown said. "She was great at distributing the ball as well as scoring goals. She was a pleasure to have in the team."

Mariah Titus, midfielder
Titus stands ninth all-time in career goals scored for the Bearkats with 14. Her break-out season came in 2013 when she scored eight goals, which is tied for the fifth most in a single season in school history.

She was named to the All-SLC second team that season and made the SLC all-tournament team in 2016. She is sixth all-time in school history with 10 assists.

Titus returned back to her hometown Bedford and is a pharmacy technician. She plans to go back to school and earn a nursing degree.Â

"She was so impactful in her ability to attack," Brown said. "She played so much bigger than her size and really inspired her teammates."

Shelby McDaniel, midfielder
McDaniel is tied for third all-time in career assists with 11 and ranks sixth in shots. Her five assists in 2013 is tied for the fifth most in a single season at Sam Houston.

She was a first-team All-SLC selection in 2014 and honorable mention in 2015.

McDaniel graduated with an MBA. She played one year of pro soccer in France. For the last three years she has worked for a private charter airline that transports our troops all over the world and has visited 25 countries in the last three years.Â

"She had a great vision for the game and could impact the game from any position," Brown said. "She was also a true example of what a great teammate should be."

Beryl Smith, midfielder
Smith scored seven goals in 2017, which ranks 12th all-time in most goals scored in a single season. She earned first-team All-SLC honors as a senior.
Â
She went on to receive her master's degree in nutrition and metabolism at the University of Texas Medical Branch and graduate in December 2019. Smith works as a registered dietician at a hospital in Kingwood.Â

"Beryl was always a mainstay in the midfield and then went on a goal scoring spree in her senior year," Brown said. "She was an important player for us during her time here."

Kirby Zak, midfielder
Zak, the captain of the All-Decade Team, was a four-time All-SLC selection, including first-team honors in 2010 and second team in both 2011 and 2012. She is tied for fourth all-time in career goals scored with 19 and first in assists with 18.

She scored nine goals in 2009, which is the fifth most by a Bearkat in a single season, and she had 10 assists that season which is the most in school history.

Zak moved to Oregon in 2015, got married and moved back to Texas in 2019. She started working as an operating room nurse in Fort Worth in January.Â

"She was our most impactful player during her time here," Brown said. "She was smooth on the ball and handled her opponent's pressure with ease. She kept her team and coaching staff laughing at all times with her easy-going personality. She would definitely captain the All-Decade Team."
