KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Sam Houston men's basketball team has three representatives on the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division I All-District 22 team, the organization announced Tuesday.
Â
Junior Zach Nutall earned a spot on the All-District 22 first team, and senior Demarkus Lampley is a second-team honoree. Head coach Jason Hooten was named Co-Coach of the Year along with Abilene Christian's Joe Golding.
Â
Nutall and Lampley made up one of the best offensive backcourts in the country while leading Sam Houston to a third-place finish in the Southland Conference.
Â
Nutall, the SLC Player of the Year, led the league in scoring at 19.35 points per game, which ranked 33rd in the nation and was also the highest since the Bearkats moved up to the Division I level in 1987. He shot 37.2 percent from 3-point range, fourth best in the league, 43.9 percent from the field, 10th best, and averaged 5.71 rebounds, which ranked 13th.
Â
Lampley, who was a first-team All-SLC selection along with Nutall, had a breakout senior season. He averaged 14.61 points per game, which was 11th in the conference. He was second in the SLC in 3-point shooting percentage at 39.9 percent.
Â
Hooten turned around a roster with nine newcomers, including three true freshmen, and came within a game of winning his second Southland Conference title in three seasons. The Bearkats finished third with a 13-3 league record and went 19-8 overall.
Â
Sam Houston was one of only 11 teams in the country this season with four or less returning letterwinners.
