HUNTSVILLE — In a battle of Southland Conference unbeatens, the Sam Houston tennis team came away with a 4-3 victory over New Orleans on Friday at the McAdams Tennis Center.
The Bearkats improved to 10-2 on the season and 5-0 in SLC dual match play. The Privateers are now 5-2 overall and 4-1 in league action.
In a match between two of the league's top No. 1 singles players, junior
Sahaja Yamalapalli cruised past Ank Vullings 6-1, 6-0 to remain perfect on the season at 11-0. Sophomore
Isidora Zivkovic defeated Mar Gendra 6-3, 6-1 to improve her season record to 9-2 at No. 3 singles.
Senior
Constandena Nicolaou also stayed unbeaten at 9-0 at No. 4 singles by topping Claudette Gilhespie 6-4, 6-1. Freshman
Sahithi Vutukuru clinched the match for Sam Houston by taking a close No. 5 singles match 7-6, 6-3 over Salma Abdelrahim.
UNO won the doubles point and No. 2 and No. 6 singles.
The Bearkats have a week off before hosting Central Arkansas on March 26 at 1 p.m.
