Baker named SLC Defensive Player of the Week

FRISCO – Freshman libero Hannah Baker has been named the Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the first time this season, per a release from league officials on Tuesday morning.

Baker continued her stellar play last week, leading the Bearkats to a pair of wins at McNeese and Nicholls, running Sam Houston's win streak to nine in a row and keeping them tied atop the league standings with just two matches to play.

The Kats have not dropped a match since falling in five sets to UCA in the season opener and host rival Stephen F. Austin on Thursday at Johnson Coliseum, needing a win to clinch at least a share of the program's fourth Southland Conference title and first since 2012.

As for Baker, the freshman from Deer Park posted her third and fourth matches of the season with 20+ digs and now ranks fifth in the SLC in league-only matches with 4.79 digs per set. She picked up 22 digs and four service aces on Thursday in a 3-1 win at McNeese and followed that up two days later with a 23-dig outburst in a sweep of Nicholls.

She averaged 6.4 digs per set for the week and has produced no less than 12 in any of the Kats' 10 matches this year.
