Williams, Morgan named SLC Players of the Week

FRISCO – After closing out a perfect regular season, the Sam Houston Bearkats captured a pair of weekly honors from the Southland Conference on Monday, as Trevor Williams was named the league's defensive player of the week and Seth Morgan was named the special teams player of the week, per a release from league officials.

The honors are the first for each player and the fifth and sixth times a Bearkat has earned an honor from the league.

Williams was once again the catalyst of a Bearkat defense that showed that it is one of the top units in the FCS in a convincing win at UIW on Saturday. The Kats held the Cardinals, who ranked first in the FCS in total offense and 3rd-down efficiency along with being third in scoring, to just 14 points and 318 total yards after UIW entered averaging 599 yards and 47.6 points per game.

The College Station native finished with six stops on the day and added 1.5 tackles for loss, spearheading a SHSU attack that finished with 5.0 sacks and 9.0 sacks and only allowed 13 total rush yards by the Cardinals.

Meanwhile, Morgan was only asked to kick PATs in Saturday's victory, and he nailed all six in the 42-14 victory. The true freshman finishes the regular season 32 of 34 on PATs for the year, while also hitting nine of his 11 FG tries, with a long of 44.

The Bearkats were named as the No. 2 overall seed in the FCS playoffs on Sunday and will open up on the Road To Frisco on Saturday, April 24 at Bowers Stadium against Monmouth.

Kickoff is set for 11:00 a.m. and the game will be aired on ESPN3.
